Every dairy has cows worth building around.

They breed back consistently, remain productive through multiple lactations and produce daughters that become valuable members of the herd. Over time, these females prove that their genetics deserve a larger role in the dairy’s future.

The business question is how to turn that value into more live calves and better replacements.

A herd can improve from one generation to the next and still leave opportunity on the table. Producers need to know whether their best females are producing enough replacement candidates to move the herd at the pace the operation requires.

That is where embryo strategy comes in.

Artificial insemination, embryo transfer and in vitro fertilization each have a role in a dairy’s reproductive program. Embryo transfer gives a dairy the flexibility to build from its own donor females or bring new genetics into the herd. IVF provides a proven pathway for producing more offspring from high-priority females and putting those genetics to work sooner.

The goal is not to use more technology. It is to produce the right calves from the right females for a defined business purpose.

Start With the Outcome

The strongest embryo programs do not begin with a donor list. They begin with a target.

What does the dairy need from its next generation? The answer may be more milk components, stronger fertility, longer productive life, improved health traits, greater feed efficiency or a more consistent group of replacement females.

Those priorities determine which females should become donors, how they should be mated and which calves the program is intended to produce.

Donor selection should consider more than current production or appearance. Genomic information, fertility and health history, functional traits, family performance, and the results of previous offspring all provide evidence of what a female may contribute.

The best donor is not automatically the highest-producing cow in the herd. She is the female whose genetics most closely match the dairy’s breeding goals and whose offspring have the potential to improve the traits tied to herd performance.

Multiply the Females That Matter Most

One advantage of IVF is the ability to collect oocytes frequently from high-priority females. That gives producers more opportunities to create offspring from selected cow families and use different sires or semen types for specific breeding targets.

During a podcast conversation about the operation’s IVF program, Crystal Dykstra, GenoSource’s Female Program Director, described how that flexibility works in practice.

“We IVF our donor groups every two weeks, and you can select which females you want in that week,” Dykstra says. “You’re utilizing different bulls and different semen types to achieve the goals you set for your program.”

Collection schedules vary by donor and program. The value is not frequency alone. It is the ability to connect each collection and mating to a defined outcome.

One sire may be selected to strengthen fertility and productive life, while another may be used to improve components, health traits or overall genetic merit. Each decision should address a documented need within the herd.

During the same podcast conversation, Kyle Demmer, GenoSource’s Chief Operating Officer, described the effect of that approach at GenoSource.

“By having an aggressive IVF program, we’ve been able to essentially multiply our best cow families … to excel our genetic progress,” Demmer says.

A structured IVF program allows the influence of selected females to reach more offspring than conventional reproduction alone. For a dairy focused on improving replacement quality, that can mean more candidates from the cow families most closely aligned with its goals.

The objective, however, is not to maximize embryo numbers. It is to produce live calves that can deliver greater value within the herd.

Build on a Strong Reproductive Foundation

Embryos cannot be separated from the rest of the dairy’s reproductive management.

Donor selection and mating decisions matter, but so do recipient health, nutrition, synchronization, reproductive history and day-to-day consistency. An embryo with strong genetic potential still depends on a recipient capable of establishingand maintaining a pregnancy.

Chelsea Abbott, a Trans Ova dairy consultant, emphasizes that point.

“Embryos are not going to fix any reproductive issues,” she says. “Focusing on all the basic things that make a dairy successful is going to keep an embryo program successful as well.”

Strong recipient candidates are healthy, reproductively sound animals that are cycling appropriately and prepared nutritionally for transfer. Using recipients with poor reproductive performance can limit the results of an otherwise well-designed program.

That is why embryo strategy begins well before transfer day. Herd health, nutrition, reproduction, donor management and recipient selection must work together.

Measure the Results That Matter

Embryo production is one measure of activity. It is not the final measure of success.

A dairy should evaluate pregnancy rate following transfer, pregnancy loss, live calves produced, cost per pregnancy or live calf, genetic merit, and the eventual performance of embryo-derived offspring.

Those numbers answer practical questions:

Are the selected donors producing enough viable embryos? Are the recipients establishing and maintaining pregnancies? Is the program producing the number and type of calves the dairy needs? Are those calves developing into replacements that perform in the operation?

Tracking those outcomes gives producers and their reproductive teams a basis for adjusting donor selection, mating decisions, collection schedules and recipient criteria.

An embryo program should earn its place in the dairy’s budget by supporting measurable herd and business goals.

Fit the Program to the Dairy

Advanced reproduction does not require the same plan on every operation.

One dairy may use IVF to produce more replacements from proven cow families. Another may focus on younger females with strong genomic potential. Some dairies may use beef semen on lower-priority females while reserving selected recipients for embryos that expand their strongest cow families or bring new genetics into the herd.

A dairy may begin with a targeted group of donors and expand only after reviewing pregnancy results, live calves and cost. That creates a manageable pathway for adoption while giving the team time to refine the program around the operation’s facilities, labor and reproductive performance.

The right approach reflects the dairy’s goals, replacement needs, available recipients, management capacity and expected return.

Build the Program Through Partnership

A successful embryo strategy requires more than a procedure. It requires a collaborative approach.

An experienced reproductive team can help producers evaluate donor candidates, build mating strategies, identify recipient requirements and review results. As the herd and its goals change, the team can adjust donor use, sire selection, collection schedules and transfer plans.
